erne - n., any of several sea eagles, especially Haliaeetus albicilla, also called white-tailed eagle, of Eurasia.

A close cousin of the bald eagle, occupying much the same ecological niche, only with the white on the other end. Single syllable, like urn. From Germanic root for eagle in general, which also shows up in names like Arnold ("eagle-ruler"); the PIE root shows up in Greek as ornis, bird, from which ornithology.
