parallelepiped
Jul. 13th, 2009 07:28 amparallelepiped - n., a polyhedron with six faces, each a parallelogram and each being parallel to its opposite face.
Now usually pronounced pah-re-lel-PIE-ped, but formerly and still somtimes pah-re-lel-EH-pi-ped -- that being closer to the Greek pronounciation of παραλληλεπίπεδον, having parallel plane surfaces. The επίπεδον (epipedon) means plane surface, but originally meant level, and before that, level ground. Note that a cube is a parallelepiped, as a square is just a special case parallelogram.
