fetter

fetter (FEH-tuhr) - n., a chain or shackle placed on the feet; (usu. pl.) anything that confines or restrains. v.t., to put fetters on; to confine, restrain.


In Old English, this was spelled feter or fetor, and has a close connection to foot -- though the extended noun sense had already developed before the Normans arrived.
