bulbul (BOOL-bool) - n., any of several songbirds (family Pycnonotidae) of tropical Asia and Africa with grayish or brown plumage, many with a distinct crest.

About 150 species, give or take a few taxonomic disputes. Some species are kept as pets, in no small part because of their song, and thereby they've been introduced to Florida, Hawaii, and Australia. The name comes from Persian, where it means nightingale, which is a totally different species also noted for its song.

Red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer)
