hyrax (HAI-raks) - n., any of five species (family Procaviidae) of small, thickset, herbivorous mammals of Africa and the Middle East.
Although they look kinda like woodchucks, they are actually not rodents but in fact most closely related to elephants and manatees. Also called coney and dassie. The name comes from Greek name for them, húrax, literally shrewmouse -- which is odd as they are considerably bigger than shrews or mice.
