birling (BUR-ling) - n., a sport played esp. by lumberjacks, in which two people try to balance longest on a floating log while rotating it with their feet.


Also called logrolling, for obvious reasons. From the verb birl, which is used more British than American English, meaning to spin or rotate rapidly, which dates from the early 18th century of uncertain origin, possibly a blend of birr (to make a whirring sound) and whirl.
