lugubrious

lugubrious - adj., exaggeratedly or affectedly mournful, gloomy, dismal.

I know Eyeore is the best example, but I still think of Sarcophagus Sam, the vulture undertaker from Pogo, who spoke in copperplate script with a black border; see also the Baker's "antediluvian tone" from The Hunting of the Snark. From Latin lūgubris, mournful, pertaining to mourning, from lūgēre, to mourn.
