cushat

cushat (KOOSH-uht) - n., another name for the wood pigeon or ring dove.

And sometimes even the rock dove aka common pigeon as well. The terminology of doves and pigeons is hopelessly confused, with many names used for more than one species in inconsistent ways -- which is a pity as this one in particular is a lovely word. In any case, this term dates back to Old English cūscote, wood pigeon, via intermediate form couschot.
