glom

glom (GLOM) - v.t., to steal, grab, catch. v.i., to seize upon or latch on to something, to gather or group together. n., a look or glimpse.

The first of the intransitive is the one I hear the most, usually as "glom onto" -- and FWIW I've never heard the glimpse sense. Early 20th century Americanism first attested as underworld slang in 1907 with the theft sense, alteration of Scots English glaum, to snatch at, from Scots Gaelic glàm, to grab, clutch.

And that's a week of 4x4 -- back with the regular mix next week. Happy New Year!
