witloof

witloof (WIT-lohf) - n., endive, an herb with curly serrated leaves or broad flat ones cultivated as a salad green; often specifically Belgian endive, a young broad-leaved endive plant deprived of light to form a narrow whitish head.

Also sometimes called chicory in North America, though that usually is used for a closely related plant grown for its flowers and for its root, which is ground up as a coffee substitute or additive. From Dutch, where it's a compound of wit, white + loof, foliage.
