pūkeko

pūkeko (POO-keh-koh) - n., a swamphen of Australasia (Porphyrio melanotus) with bright purple and black plumage.

Also called the Australasian swamphen or water-hen, formerly considered a subspecies of the purple swamphen. This is another wading bird, found in Australian, New Zealand, eastern Indonesia, the Mollucas, and New Guinea, and is related to and possibly ancestral to the takahe. The word is the Māori name, of course.
