sanicle (SAN-i-kul) - n., any of several umbelliferous plant of the genus Sanicula with clusters of small white flowers and oval fruits with hooked bristles.
Also called black snakeroot. Used pretty much throughout the world as a folk medicine, as an anodyne or astringent -- which is why the root of the name is (via Old French and Medieval Latin) classical Latin sānus, healthy.
