verisimilar

verisimilar (ver-uh-SIM-uh-ler) - adj., having the appearance of truth, likely, probable.

And in fiction, as a technical term, being faithful to its own rules, or internally consistent. The quality of being verisimilar is verisimilitude, which is the much more common form. Adopted around 1680 from Latin vērīsimilis, more properly vērī similis, having the appearance of truth, from vērī, genitive singular of vērum, truth + similis, like (as in similar).
