lanner

lanner (LAN-er) - n., a falcon (Falco biarmicus) of Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean with a dark brown back and buff cap; (falconry) a female lanner falcon.

A large falcon -- wingspan is 95–105 cm (37–41 in). I don't know what falconers call a male of the species. The name has been around in English since the 13th century, from Middle French lanier/laner, laggard/coward, applied to the bird for its slow flight speed (compared to other falcons) and skittish behavior, probably from Medieval Latin lānārius, wool-worker (and possibly also wool-merchant?), which became a term of abuse in the early Middle Ages applied especially to laggards and cowards, from Latin lāna, wool.
