barbola (bar-BOH-luh) - n., decoration (on ceramicware) of flowers, fruits, and the like made from barbotine or clay slip.


Also called more fully barbola work. Can be applied by hand or using a pipe like an icing pipe. My usual dictionaries don't give an etymology, but some relation to barbotine (from the French word for thin slip, clay diluted with water to make it more plastic, from barboter, to splash) seems extremely likely. Here's an ancient Egyptian example:
