bream - n., any of various European freshwater fishes with narrow deep bodies, especially of genus Abramis, but also several fresh- and saltwater species of similar shape.

The seafish called breams are usually porgies or pomfrets -- fish I know nothing about, but love the names of.From Middle English breme, from Old French, from Frankish (one of the few words to come from that language), from Proto-Germanic base *brehwan, to shine, glitter, sparkle. By which you can guess they are silvery.
