vitriolic - adj., of, related to, derived from, or resembling sulfuric acid (H2SO4); caustic; scathing, bitterly harsh.

Where caustic is both in the literal burning and figurative verbal sense. From the old name of sulfuric acid, oil of vitriol, from Latin vitrium, glass, so called because of the glassy appearance of many of its salts.
