imbricate

imbricate - adj., overlapping in a regular pattern, as in shingles, tiles, or scales.

I love the sound of this one. Ultimately from imbrex, the Latin name for the convex tile that covers the joints between roofing tiles, which seems to be somehow connected to imber, rain.

I like its meaning a lot and yet when I hear it, I think "implicate"--as if all those patterns are pointing a finger at something... clearly it's just the sound of the word. Oh, and if you say "imbrication," I think of a curse! Ah, mental malapropisms...

"He muttered an imbrication -- right over Jennie's last words, so I couldn't hear them."
