Concerning which, btw, there is some debate over whether it originated with Dr. Seuss. The word first appears in print in If I Ran the Zoo (1950), as a creatures of the cloudcuckoozoo, but whether the slang term comes from it is an open question. The word's third appearance in print (1970) is, incidentally, with the nurd spelling.
