skirret - n., a plant of the parsley family, Sium sisarum, cultivated for its edible, sweet tubers.


Kind of like white sweet potatoes. Etymology gets convoluted: in Middle English it was skirwhit, alteration (influenced by the folk etymology of skir, pure + white) of Old French eschervi, probably from Arabic karawyā, caraway, from Greek karō.
