radix - n., the base of a number system or logarithms.


Also, a root or source. In the mathematic sense, this would be 10 in the decimal system or 2 in the binary system. The radix point is what you call the decimal point when you're not in decimal. From the 16th century, from Latin rādīx, root, which is the same root behind race and radical, and behind that is PIE wrād*- -- but that may be a little too rootish.
