This definition is from the Forgotten English page-a-day calendar, which I am delighted to have once again -- they were around in the 90s, but disappeared for a while as the author went on to other enterprises. I won't make it a habit of taking everything from it -- and certainly not on the day it comes up -- but I cannot resist celebrating that yay it's back.
The definition above contains the strong connotations of wantonness, and a old-fashioned glossary of Shakespeare uses "carpet-knoight." I should, however, note that dictionary.com give up the older, obsolete meanings of someone who attends in a chamber, as in a chambermaid -- this is the sense used by Chaucer -- as well as "a civilian; a carpetmonger." Whatever that's supposed to mean.
