saury - n., any of several slender long-beaked fish of the family Scomberesocidae, related to needlefish.


Good eating, especially grilled. From New Latin saurus, lizard, from Greek sauros; however, cf. saurel (a type of mackerel), where Greek saƻros is defined as sea fish.

And that wraps it up for this week's edition of Something Fishy. There's enough odd and interesting fish names, though, that I'll probably bring this back again -- after posting more backlog.
