futon - n., a thin mattress of layers of cotton batting placed on a floor or on a raised, foldable frame.
Plural futon or futons. Traditional Japanese bedding, which was not on a frame as typical in the west, but folded and stored in a closet during the day. From Japanese 布団 (pronounced ふとん), from Middle Chinese phu + thuan, meaning something on the lines of round bedquilt.
