hibachi - n., a small charcoal-burning cooking grill.

A portable barbecue -- I grew up with us using a hibachi for outdoor grilling, which made actual barbecue grills look ostentatiously large to me. From Japanese 火鉢, from hi, fire + hachi, bowl, pot. In Japan, a hibachi is a charcoal heater -- the small grill is actually called shichirin (七輪). The name change probably was done for marketing purposes, shichirin being not as easy to pronounce in English.

And that wraps it up for "I Feel Like I'm Speaking Japanese" Week (IJW for Short). Back next week with the usual supramundane mix.
