scoria - n., porus cinderlike fragments of dark lava.


Also called cinders, slag, clinkers. The difference between this and pumice is generally that scoria has larger bubbles and bubble walls, so it doesn't float. From Middle English, meaning dross, from Latin, from Greek skōría, from skōr, excrement, dung. So, volcano droppings.
