vigorish - n., the charge made by a bookie for placing a bet, also the rate of such a charge; the interest paid to a loan shark.


Also called the vig and the take. An Americanism, from Yiddish slang, in turn from either Ukrainian výgrash or Russ výigrysh, both meaning winnings. Pronounced like vigor + ish.
