A word to get the week started off right. As you might guess, this one's out of Scotland, with usage datable to at least the 1640s. It's an alteration of blatherskate, with the blather being the same foolish nonsense of today and the skate being a term of contempt, possibly from a Norse root meaning excrement -- in other words, a cognate of shit(e).
