torchère (tawr-SHAIR) or torchiere (tawr-CHEER) - n., a tall floor lamp with a bowl that directs the light upwards; a tall stand for a candelabrum.

A form of indirect lighting. Always wondered what those things were called. The former spelling and latter meaning being the original. Borrowed around 1905 from French, from torche, torch + -ère, a variant feminine form of -ier, a suffix of agency.
