squamous (SKWAY-muhs) - adj., covered in or consisting in scales; scaly; scale-like.


Note the initial long a -- I've been mispronouncing it all these years. The squamous epithelium is that layer of skin cells that look like flat scales. Borrowed, apparently initially as medical jargon, around 1530 from Latin squāmōsus, from squāma, a scale. A squicky sounding word, no?
