poult (pohlt) - n., a young fowl, esp. a young turkey.

Especially one intended for eating. This can be any fowl -- chicken, pheasant, grouse, et cet. The word was borrowed as both pulte and polet around the start of the 15th century from Old French poulet, young fowl (diminutive of poule, hen, from Latin pulla), but whether the letter-swap happened in the borrowing or after arrival is unclear.
