Theme week:: words from falconry. Starting with a quartet:

eyas(s) (EYE-as) - n., a nestling hawk, esp. a bird taken from the nest before it grows pin feathers.

brancher (BRAN-chuhr) - n., an unfledged hawk, esp. a bird taken while it still hops from branch to branch but cannot yet fly.

passage(r) (PA-suj, PA-su-juhr) - n., a hawk taken during its first migration, before its first moult.

haggard (HA-guhrd) - n., a hawk taken as an adult, after its first moult.

All of these date from the 15th or sometimes 16th century, from various sources, many unknown. Of particular interest is the last, which is the source of, not derived from, the modern sense of wild in appearance.
