stevedore (STEE-vi-dohr) - n., someone who loads or unloads ships.


Also as a verb, to do so. The common American term for a docker, wharfie, or longshoreman. Borrowed around 1788 from Spanish estibador, a cargo loader, from estibar, to load (cargo), from Latin stīpāre, to pack full, to press down.
