deckled (DEH-kuhld) - adj., of paper, having a rough edge.

Handmade paper often has a deckled edge or a deckle edge; there are also deckling scissors that can make paper look that way. The name come from the frame, called a deckle, that goes on top of the screen used to pull pulp up from the fiber soup, thus confining it to a rectangle, with the edge of the deckle being the deckle edge of the paper. Deckle itself was borrowed in the early 19th century from German, where it is the diminutive of Decke, a covering, from decken, to cover.
