piri-piri or piri piri (pi-ri-pi-ri) - n., a very hot pepper of southern Africa; a hot sauce made from same.
Also known as birdseye pepper. Via Portuguese, and the sauce is primarily used in the former Portuguese colonial states of Angola, Namibia, and Mozambique -- as well as in Portugal itself. The name originally came from one of the Bantu-family languages of what is not Mozambique, where it is literally pepper reduplicated, and has been borrowed into other languages of the region (such as pili pili in Swahili).
