cisgender (SIS-jen-duhr) - adj., having a gender identity that matches one's biological sex or that is affirmed by society.


That is, not transgender. Derivative terms include cis-male and cis-female. The term was coined from Latin roots (the prefix cis- means to the near/this side, as opposed to the trans-, to the far/other side) apparently in the Usenet newsgroup alt.transgendered in or shortly before 1994, and increasingly used in used in gender studies since around 2005. Very useful, because sometimes you need a term for not being transgendered.
