dabchick (DAB-chik) - n., any of several small Old World grebes.
Especially the little grebe -- grebes being freshwater diving birds more closely related to flamingos than ducks. Also used as an endearment. The word is recorded from the 1550s, earlier form dapchick or dopchick, from Old English dop, to dive + chick.
