Also spelled carwhichet. Not to be confused with a koan, though what the sound of one hand clapping might be both. Origin unknown, though a humorous alteration of catechism has been proposed, and possibly coined by Ben Jonson in Bartholomew Fayre (from 1614). Not seeing it though.
