hastate (HAS-tayt) - adj., of, pertaining to, or resembling a spear or halberd; (Bot.) (of a leaf) triangular with a pointed tip and two outward-pointing lobes at the base.


Not backward pointing as an arrowroot leaf, which are sagittate (arrow-shaped) but outward: this diagram shows the difference. Coined around 1788 from Latin hastātus, armed with a spear, from hasta, spear.
