In the last sense, resembling dandruff. Bran is, of course, the broken coat of a cereal grain, which is separated from the flour by sifting. Itchy when it gets inside your clothes, that stuff. Adopted from Latin in the 1640s, derivative of Latin furfur, bran (which was separately adopted as a synonym for dandruff).
