Used in, e.g., botany, as in a plant with chartaceous leaves. Adopted around 1650 from Latin chartāceus, from charta, sheet of paper (also, a document -- the Manga Carta is using this sense), from Greek chártēs, papyrus leaf, literally something to make marks on (so same root as character).
