cushat (KUHSH-uht, KOOSH-uht) - n., the ringdove or wood pigeon (Colomba palumbus).

North England and Scottish word, primarily, also known as culver in south England. The wood pigeon is not to be confused with its similar-looking cousin, the rock pigeon, Columba livia, otherwise known as the common pigeon of cities worldwide. In Middle English, it was spelled couschot, and in Old English cūscote, but after that the trail goes cold.
