speedwell (SPEED-wel) - n., any of several herbaceous plants or shrubs of the genus Veronica with opposite leaves and small, often blue flowers.

Which describes 450 or maybe 500 species. Grown as ornamentals, especially low-growing herbaceous types native to the Northern hemisphere. The name (in use since at least 1578) comes from how briefly the flowers last -- they speed away well.
