The sport name coming from this, being nothing more than what happens when English speakers run together the French la crosse, the stick -- alternately translated as a hooked stick, staff, or crosier, and indeed crosse is cognate of that last -- which was possibly short for le jeu de la crosse, the game with the stick. In use in English since 1867.
