Theme week! -- dyes.
solferino (sul-fuh-REE-now) - n., a moderate purple-red color.
This one should probably be paired with magenta, since they have almost the same origin: both were artificial dyes discovered in 1859, the year of the Italian war of independence, and battles of the same were fought near the towns of Magenta and Solferino in northern Italy, with the last the final, decisive conflict. (It was also the battle that inspired Jean-Henri Dunant to start his campaign that led to the Geneva Convention.) These were big news, and must like the bikini was named after the Bikini Atoll atomic tests not in commemoration but because it was in the news, so were these colors.
