To my surprise, though it has the hallmarks of it, this is not another colorful 19th century Americanism, but instead and adoption of the obsolete French verb metagraboulizer or matagraboliser, which dates back to Middle French, after which my trail goes cold. I cannot even pick apart potential roots.
