No, not gremlins -- and yes, always only in plural. This is one of those Scots words that never escaped south into general English usage -- it doesn't appear in the usual heavy-weight dictionaries, but only the Dictionary of the Scots Language (plus a suppliment example) -- according to which, it's from Norwegian dialect grimla, to glimmer/twinkle/blink, with related word grimlen, shining intermittently.
