Dictionaries, even medical ones, vary over exactly what this covers, which suggests to me that it's not a common term of art in medicine. The above is my attempt at a synthesis of definitions found. Coined in 1888 on the model of amnesia, only using para- in the sense of alongside or defective instead of a-, not on the stem meaning memory.
