maundy (MAWN-dee) - n., a ceremony of washing the feet of the poor commemorating Jesus' washing of His disciples' feet during the Last Supper. adj., of or pertaining to this ceremony, esp. as Maundy Thursday, the day commemorating the Last Supper.

As commanded by Jesus in John 13 -- in particular, the footwashing is verses 4-15, while a little later in verse 34 Jesus says "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another as I have loved you," (KJV) or in the Vulgate, "Mandātum novum dō vōbīs ... " -- the first word being the Latin for commandment, which in Old French became mandé, something commanded, entering Middle English as maundy.
