thalweg (TAHL-veg) - n., (geol.) the line that connects the lowest points in a valley or river channel; (geog.) the middle of the main navigable channel of a waterway.


The former is significant because that is usually the line of fastest stream flow, while the latter is significant because when the river is the boundary between states, that's the exact line. Note pronunciation, as this is from German (and indeed the modern German spelling, post-1901 reforms, is Talweg), literally valley-way.
